Riverside Parkway is a prominent Major Arterial in Tulsa that is a main link from South Tulsa to Downtown, as well as being a defining feature of the Tulsa landscape. Over the course of twenty years BKL has designed the Riverside Parkway from 56th Street to 101st Street for the City of Tulsa Public Works Department. BKL and the City of Tulsa started with an expressway study for the Riverside alignment.

56th to 71st - Once the alignment study was completed it was determined to utilize a parkway system and this is where the design for Riverside from 56th to 71st began. It included 1.5 miles of divided 4-lane roadway with turn lanes and two major intersections.

56th to 61st  - Widened from 2-lane to 4-lane. 61st to 71st was on new alignment. BKL also worked closely with the Parks Department to design jogging/biking trails between Riverside Parkway and the Arkansas River as part of the construction project.

71st Street to Joe Creek (Estimated Construction Cost: $3,100,000.00) The Riverside Parkway project from 71st to Joe Creek was the next project. It was also a 4-lane roadway divided Parkway on a new alignment. BKL designed jogging/bike trails for this entire project to continue the Tulsa Trails System. The design of Riverside over Joe Creek included a span bridge across Joe Creek with decorative enhancements. This project involved hydraulic analysis and the concrete channelization of Joe Creek.

Joe Creek to 81st Street (Estimated Construction Cost: $1,100,000.00) The next phase was the design of Riverside from Joe Creek to 81st Street. This was also a 4-lane roadway divided on new alignment and included one major intersection with turn lanes. The project also included improving 81st Street from Riverside to Lewis Avenue with another intersection design. The Tulsa trails continued on this project along Riverside Parkway.

81st Street to 101st Street (Estimated Construction Cost: $12,800,000.00) The most recent design phase, completed in 1999, was the extension of Riverside from 81st Street to 96th Street. This project was constructed in two phases, 91st Street to 96th Street and 81st Street to 91st Street. It consisted of:

  • 2.1 miles of 4-lane Divided Parkway on new alignment;

  • A major 5-way intersection at 91st Street and Delaware;

  • An interchange with the Creek Turnpike;

  • A span bridge over Vensel Creek;

  • Three RCB bridges over Fred Creek;

  • Hydraulic analysis, realignment and channelization of Fred Creek;  storm sewer design;

  • Widening of 91st Street to 4-lanes and Realignment of Lewis Avenue to 91st Street.

  • Continuation of the Tulsa Trails system hooking up with the Creek Turnpike

BKL also assisted with the negotiations with Creek Tribe to obtain right-of-way for this phase of design. BKL assisted with construction inspection and other construction phase services throughout all of the Riverside projects.
