BKL, with George Rochelle as Project Manager, designed
improvements to the 81st Street & Delaware Intersection in three contract
phases.
BKL performed an initial alignment study and recommended an
alignment for the intersection of 81st Street South and Delaware Avenue, to
mitigate the severe sight distance problems, add turn lanes at the intersection,
and widen 81st Street extending from the intersection. The intersection is
currently 3-way with 81st Street going through east to west and Delaware meeting
from the South. All three approaches are at very steep grades with 81st Street
having the most severe sight distance problems.
In the conceptual design BKL determined that the top of the
vertical crest should be lowered by sixteen feet. Some additional right-of-way
and some retaining walls will be required.
As part of the preliminary design phase, BKL designed the new alignment and
geometry for the intersection as well as the storm drainage design. BKL designed
the retaining walls to include a 96' barrier wall with a patterned concrete
finish. We designed the intersection and coordinated with the City of Tulsa on
signalization.
BKL prepared right-of-way plans for the additional right-of-way,
worked with Oral Roberts University (an adjacent property) and designed the
storm sewer system including a long double 6X5 RCB parallel with the roadway.
The RCB will be bid as either precast concrete or reinforced concrete.
